Annotate
A high level approach to comprehension is having students annotate. While we would love to provide every student an individual copy of the text to write and highlight in, that's not usually possible, so instead sticky notes are a close alternative. Students at this level won't be able to get away with simple annotations such as: "I like this," "I don't understand," "This is neat," etc. We want to teach students meaningful annotations, such as: do you agree with what is happening in the text; discuss something that is confusing to you; what do you wish the author included, etc. Having students interact with the text in this way allows them to create connections and meaning. Pass out your sticky notes and download the annotating bookmark remind below and have them get started. Afterward, having students pair share their annotations with a partner: what was similar; what was different?
